When the child of the widow the prophet Elijah was staying with died, she assumed it was her fault, that Elijah’s arrival had pointed a divine spotlight on her, and God was punishing her for some sin she had committed. We consider this question in light of Jesus raising another woman’s son from the dead.

A widow is about to make a last meal for herself and her child when a hungry stranger approaches, asking to be fed first. Her decision to feed him saves her life and changes the shape of Judaism and Christianity.

With everything that’s wrong in the world, Jesus’ first miracle should be a healing, or an exorcism, or calming a storm, or some kind of geopolitical resolution, right? …but it’s not. It’s water to wine. It’s joy.

It’s not as important where we came from, as how our beliefs about where we came from impact how we live our lives in love.

Evil is never the end of the story. Love is the end of the story.
